Late Fees & Other Daily Stuff

Hello Everyone!

So, yesterday I did something really clever and deleted the entire front end of this web page! I edited one of the core files to try and delete some extra spaces and ended up deleting a crucial file by overwriting it with the old file with spaces removed. It had me quite panicked for a good four hours until I finally discovered all my posts and comments had been safely stored in the database on my web server ‘behind the scenes’ and were not connected to the screwed up coding on the end-user side of the web page. A complete re-install later and I was able to get it all working again and even added new features at the top of the page for people to subscribe to get email updates when I make new posts or people make comments. Try it out and let me know if it works properly or not!

Today was a sad day in my world, sad because it was the end of the mid-semester break. It would have been the first day actually back at school but for the fact I had a ‘take home’ to do during lecture time instead of going to the lecture test so spent the lecture time at my computer writing about methods in researching politics and international relations. Fascinating stuff really, not that I have much of an idea when I will use it in a practical non tertiary study environment.

The only problem with having stayed home today has been the fact that it made me too lazy to make a special trip into town just to drop off the games that I rented from the DVD store in town. This is actually a problem I have quite often, I think I spend more in actual fines and late fees than I do on the original rental cost! It’s insane really, but for some reason I always end up just deciding that going in ‘tomorrow’ will be okay. Sometimes I just plain forget to bring them to my car in the morning so they don’t make it to the store when I drive through town to Uni.

I know that the rental store gives good customer awards for people renting DVDs and games, but I think they should start giving me rewards stamps / points for the amount of money I spend in late fees as well! It is by far the larger cost to me and biggest profit margin to them. Does anyone use one of those online ‘no late fees or return times’ DVD store subscriber things where they post you the DVDs? Do any of the New Zealand sites do games as well or just DVDs? Can you check the zoning on your DVD before you rent it? I have a blue-ray player on my PS3 but because I got it in Japan it will only play the unzoned blue-ray disks or ones from Japan so I need to be able to check for the right zone. Leave me some comments if you have any info for me on this! I appreciate it!

Well, seeing as I am not going to manage to drop the disks off tonight I am going to go and make the most of still having them and play some Baseball, kill some zombies, and crash a few cars at hundreds of miles an hour! Not all in the same game mind you…

Have a good one folks!

  1. You should sign up to Amalgamated Video on Taranaki St!

They never charge you for late fees unless it’s REALLY late.

  2. Once I hired 6 movies for a week, and returned them on the sixth day. Later I went to hire more movies and told I had an over due fee of over $50 dollars.
They claimed I had returned 3 of the movies late. I was furious but could not prove I had returned them on time so I had to pay the fee (you can BUY 3 movies for $50).
I did not hire movies that day and made it clear I would never hire movies from that store again. The staff member said “because you’re spending $50 with us you get these discount vouchers you can use next time”, I tossed the vouchers back at him.

That store went out of business and I am happy 🙂
But you should return stuff on time because other people will be waiting to hire those movies and games!

  3. The clerk probably put your $50 in his pocket!
I would care about the fact that people are waiting to hire them, BUT every time I try to reserve something they always screw it up, so I don’t feel very sympathetic to the person waiting. I’m sorry if that ‘next person’ is reading this! It’s not your fault but you will be suffering anyway.
