Fuji Yama Surprise

We’ve only been here 24 hours but it really does seem like we’ve never left. Todays been pretty lazy so far. An emergency trip to Fujisawa City, to try and repair or replace the mobile wifi router we got here a few years ago, was a bust as they wanted us to pay almost $150 to get a new one or $50 a month for a one year contract (despite the fact we’d only use it 1 month a year tops.) It was nice to get behind the wheel of a car on the hilariously narrow Japanese roads, and to get some emergency socks and t-shirts from UniQlo to replace the ones I totally left behind.

Todays highlights? Driving along a narrow backroad between Fujisawa and Shounandai on our way home at dusk then seeing Fuji Yama (Mt Fuji) silhouetted on a burnt orange sky perfectly sticking up through a few low clouds, suddenly appear out of nowhere like a postcard through a gap between houses. It was very cool to see.

Other highlights have been the delicious home cooked meal we had with the family, where Grandma Yui turned up with two boxes of frozen scallops  from Hokkaido. Fresh enough to drop on a plate slap around with some soy sauce and wasabi then just eat raw. Scallop Sashimi, best way to eat scallops ever invented. That wasn’t even a planned part of the meal but hey that’s just how it goes over here. Oh and the fact it’s been a very balmy 30° all day. It’s hotter than a Wellington summer, and it’s meant to be mid autumn! Can’t complain though, there might be a typhoon on the way so we’ll enjoy it while we  can!

That’s all for today folks. Tomorrow Naoko is off to a wedding so I’ll be hanging out in Shounandai on my own. If I get up to anything fun I’ll be sure to write more! For now, oyasuminasai! (Good night!)
