Today is Monday the 10th of Jan…
Kuidaore is an Osakan expression meaning basically to eat until you die, or eat so much you achieve a heaven like state. I failed to do this in Osaka simply due to lack of time, but yesterday I did my best to make up for it here in Shounandai!
It started with a large helping of Zaru Soba for lunch in Kamakura. Zaru Soba is a cold noodle dish served with a bowl of sort of sweet soy sauce soup that one then adds spring onion and wasabi to their own taste. After that the soup then gets hot water added and we drink it like tea.
The road from Kamakura back to the house was basically one long traffic jam. By the time we got back, Naoko was already running late for dinner with her girl friends from high school days. I had no plans so I decided to go to Yatto, an Izakaya restaurant that I used to go to all the time when I lived here.
Almost all the staff had changed, and the cooks were all new to me, including one who was only on his third day behind the grill. The great thing about this place is you can sit at the counter and all the cooking is done right in front of you, that way when you see something delicious being made you can just say “I’ll have one of those!”.
I started with a plate of thinly sliced tuna kalpachio, then a mochi rice cake pizza, then lastly a dessert which was some kind of strawberry mouse and ice cream. I also enjoyed a nice glass of black sugar plum wine on the rocks. All the detailed descriptions in the world can’t do these dishes justice so I have included some photos to help you imagine the deliciousness. By the end of it all I could barely move, this I felt is something akin to the essence of Kuidaore. I’m just waiting for the day I can try this in osaka where it should be done!
I also took a couple of videos of them cooking but I’ll upload those later via you tube.
Today is going to be a lazy day I think. Might go out for dinner and try to eat lots more! Only two days to go before the feasting ends and we come back to NZ.
